Run 52

I decided to celebrate Easter with run. It was multi-purpose. My dog was getting annoying to the others in the house, so I took her for 3 and then did the rest solo. Much easier than yesterday because the hills were more subtle. They were there, but instead of covered a few really steep hills they were gradual during the whole run. Much easier that way for me.

Run 51/Week 13 Recap

I am at my in-laws for the Easter weekend in Anamosa. It's quite a hilly area for Iowa and my time reflects that, I suppose. Still, it was a good run, my farthest since October, and it felt great. If I can average this time or under for my flat marathon, I'd be happy with it.

A good week. A busy week at church, with it being Holy Week, so I didn't run yesterday. However, I did do 3 extra, shorter runs in my Minimus. They really feel great. Overall, I came out ahead.

Run 50

Whoa. 50 runs. Crazy. This was just a slow, easy jog with a friend. He's got surgery in a month or so and wants to get in better shape before that. I'm just doing my part. This is an approximate time, but I wasn't really keeping track.

It's a little weird to be wear normal shoes again after Minimus a few times. I really didn't think that I'd notice how "unfeeling" running shoes are, but I think I get it. I made good time, though.

Run 48

Had such a great run in my Minimus yesterday that I decided to do another tonight. That, and I had a brownie that left me feeling pretty gross/dirty. I could have gone longer, but I have been told by several people that I shouldn't go too far, too hard, or too long to start out because it requires a different form and uses different muscles to do it. Still, I'm very impressed. I'm still planning on doing my normal 5.8 tomorrow, too, so I decided to stick with the 5k tonight.

Run 47

I may never buy a different pair of shoes again! I absolutely love the New Balance Minimus Zero. My first minimalist run ever and it went great. A few steps of pain but, after a slight straightening of my foot, it went away instantly. It also forced me to use good form, which drastically improved my time, too. It came as a good time, too, because I finished "Born to Run" today. I find that passionate and well written storied, books, songs, etc all inspire me to create something. Today, it inspired me to have a good run but music is really where I do my true expression, so we'll see what happens.

Run 46

A good run. I love the feeling of a run where I'm tired at the beginning but by the end, I could go further if I had time. Running so far this year has really made a different in my energy level. Even after my longer runs, I always feel more awake throughout the day than if I don't run. Probably a lot of reasons for that, but I'll save those thoughts for another post. Today, I'm going to try a few miles in some New Balance Minimus shoes to see how the "barefoot" style works for me.

Run 45/Week 12 Recap

A good run. I started out too fast (7 minute miles) and got a stitch in my side, so I walked 2 separate times for 10 seconds each and that took care of it. The last 3 miles or so felt absolutely wonderful. From here until the marathon, I am usually running 10 miles or more on Saturday, so I'll have to get my pacing down before then. Good thing I have 10 weeks or so to start to figure it out.

A good week, overall. I have enjoyed reading "Born to Run" and trying to implement that mentality and form, which has given good results. It's the first week that I have been able to stick to my M-W-F-S schedule for a few weeks. Felt good to do that.

Run 44

A good run. I'm trying to keep my posture and form good, based on the book I'm reading. It feels good when I use that form. Straight back, short strides mainly striking the middle or ball of the foot, and not moving too much above the waist. I'll keep working on it.

Run 43

Very cold run for this time of year. But, on a warmer note, I've started reading a book called "Born to Run" about the Tarahumara people which are known to be the world's best runners. It's super interesting.

Also, I saw this article on Facebook about a legally blind woman who just set a record as the fastest visually impaired half marathon. Pretty cool.

Run 42

I ran in a blizzard today. Well, it was just snowing a little with a decent wind blowing it around. We are in a blizzard warning, however, so I'll count it as a blizzard. It was hard because, obviously, I was running in snow (which, if you've never done it, it's a lot like running in sand) and the wind was pushing back. Plus, I couldn't really look straight ahead because the snow would sting my eyes. On the positive side, it was really really pretty.

A longer run to make up for no run on Monday. Further than my marathon program, but, once my training regimen prescribes more than 23 miles or so I'll start adhering to that.

Run 39

A pretty annoying run, actually. The trail I run on hasn't been plowed yet, so I made a new route on some back roads. That wasn't so annoying, but those roads were pretty well snow covered and super icy, as well, so I spent a good amount of time spinning my wheels, so to speak. Oh well. I have a new route and my time didn't really suffer all that much, I guess.

I'm starting to train for a marathon, now. I will do the Marathon to Marathon on June 8th. That only really leaves me about 11 weeks to train, but I'm hoping that the fact that I've been running they way I do will help.

Run 35/Week 9 Recap

Decided to take a longer run this morning. It's nice to do those, sometimes. Once I settle into a groove, I can think about others things or nothing at all. It gives me time to clear my mind and, especially on a Saturday of a little bit of a weird week, it gives me time to recalibrate my thinking and focus. Plus, when you're done, you can see numbers like this:

It's weird to think I'm starting my 3rd month of this. I've gotten past the "this-is-so-cool/fun/exciting" phase and I'm pretty sure I'm in a grind at this point. It will get better when it warms up and I can take my daughter with me in the running stroller during the day instead of waking up early to run before everybody else gets up.  Until then, I'm still in it for the long haul.
